Every volley you take below net height goes into the net or floats up. What is most likely wrong?

Low volley: bend the knees, keep the racket head above the wrist, open the face slightly, push it deep.

Why

The most common low-volley error is reaching down with the racket instead of the legs. When the racket head drops below the wrist, the face closes and the ball goes into the net, or the player compensates by flicking it up and it floats. The fix is in the legs: bend the knees so your eyes are close to the height of the ball, keep the racket head up, open the face slightly, and push through the ball toward the target. The low volley is then a deep, controlled ball rather than a lottery.

What this means at your level

Beginner

Get your eyes down to the level of the ball by bending your knees. The racket comes down with your body, not by itself.

Intermediate

Hold the finish for a moment after a low volley. If the racket head is below your wrist, that is why it went in the net.

Advanced

The low volley is where fitness shows in the third set. Legs that stop bending produce a racket head that drops.

Why not you are not hitting through the ball firmly enough?

Pace is not the problem on a low volley. The face and the body position are.

What should a beginner do here?

Get your eyes down to the level of the ball by bending your knees. The racket comes down with your body, not by itself.

How does this change for an advanced player?

The low volley is where fitness shows in the third set. Legs that stop bending produce a racket head that drops.
